Road Signs
Sunday, September 26th, 2010Fifteen years ago we asked permission from the council to erect a small road sign on a lamp post opposite the turning into the lane off the main road. Several weeks ago a couple of our very observant clients informed us that the sign wasn’t there and they were right, sign and brackets gone. As the sign was quite high up and not easy to remove I guessed it must be something to do with the council. So I rang up them up and asked to speak to someone responsible for signs, they put me through to planning, who put me through to highways, who put me through to the depot. They didn’t have a clue who was responsible. Then I was told someone had left and no one had taken the post yet so no one was responsible for signs. After several phone calls we eventually found the man who was responsible. He commented that he was fed up of all these illegal signs and they were all coming down. We told him that we were not aware that our sign was illegal as we had permission to put it up. To which he replied ‘Ah but that was under the old Taff Ely Council and now we are Rhondda Cynon Taff so its illegal and you will need to apply for planning permission’. As the sign is our property we asked if we could have it back and were told ‘If I’ve got the time to go and look for it’. Our local community councillor took up the case and retrieved the sign. A couple of weeks ago I was driving back from Wrexham via the Brecon Beacons and I couldn’t help noticing the vast amount of signs on the sides of roads advertising everything from Car boot sales to pick your own, numerous road side cafes, garages, farm shops etc. In these times of recession when small businesses need all the help they can get it is reassuring to know that in Rhondda Cynon Taff we have a council who chooses a time when cut backs in public spending are rife to allocate public money to sign removal in order to make life even more difficult for the large amount of small businesses in the borough trying to make ends meet in a recession. Think about it next time you vote. Oh and while I’m having a rant I see that some signs haven’t yet been removed is that because the council are not very efficient in sign removal or a case of who you know.

Winter programmes
Sunday, September 12th, 2010Its hard to believe it’s nine years ago yesterday that 9/11 happened, I remember I was on holiday in Tenerife with a friend that had never flown before and was very scared she nearly passed out on take off and then mid week we had these images of planes flying into towers, needless to say it took a lot of persuading to convince her that it wasn’t likely to happen on the way home. Talking of time passing quickly summer seems to have come and gone and we are now into our winter programmes, Students start back Tuesday, Winter Horse and Pony Adoption starts next week. The Team Show Jumping as well as the Dressage series starts in October, entries are already coming in. Hacks are now being taken out on Saturdays by the Pony Club Centre Committee to raise funds for the Halloween Party (Oct 30th), nights are drawing in and it will soon be time for the Christmas Gymkhana as its only 103 days to Christmas.

Fun Dog Show
Monday, September 6th, 2010On Sunday The Talygarn Pony Club Centre Committee (comprising of 9 members between the ages of 14 and 19) ran what is fast becoming the Annual Fun Dog Show. I did think as the weather wasn’t very pleasant it might have put a few off coming if they weren’t aware that it was held indoors but needless to say we had a very good turn out. The girls arrived early and set up the wonkiest looking rings I have ever seen with rope and electric fencing stakes. The dog Agility course had several jumps, a hoop to jump through some bending poles and a tunnel. There were 9 classes including waggiest tail, prettiest eyes, best trick, fancy dress, best puppy, best veteran etc. We had an absolutely fab judge Jane who was very friendly and encouraging to all competitors. I loved the winner of the best trick Cerys Green who had two dogs and when she asked one dog who its best friend was it put its paw on the other dog. Carys Morgan won the Fancy Dress with her Jack Russell Patches who was dressed as a sheep and covered in moulting cotton wool balls. Lots of dogs had a go at the dog agility some amazing and some not so keen. The girls always make cakes at these events to sell which are really yummy and hard to pass up. Glad the diets not starting till tomorrow. Pictures are on our Gallery

Chloe Reakes
Sunday, September 5th, 2010Every year in September we always lose one or two clients to Uni. This year we are losing Chloe Reakes. Chloe has ridden at Talygarn for 10years, starting in a beginner lesson at 9yrs old Chloe has worked her way up through every level. Chloe started helping out on the yard at 12yrs progressing to a Saturday job, she then became a part time student passed some BHS Exams and starting teaching. Chloe has been a Pony Club Centre member taking part in just about everything possible. Chloe has been a member of teams that have won the Team Show Jumping, the Area Quiz, the National Quiz, the Area Horse Care and the Centre Equitation Competition. Chloe has never owned a horse of her own but through sheer hard work and dedication she has become an excellent rider. Chloe is well known at the stables and will be definitely be missed. Last Wednesday we had a surprise party in the local pub and it was lovely to see so many turn up to wish her well. Chloe has always had an ambition to be a vet and we were all thrilled to hear that she has been accepted into Liverpool University. Here are some memories from the last ten years Chloe Reakes.
