BHS Stage 3 Resit

Wednesday last week Amelia and I drove to Reading for Amelia to resit her Stage 3 care, having passed the riding first time but failed the care on the lungeing. We booked into a lovely guest house, Stag Hall, near Henley on Thames. It is a very quaint and old cottage our bedroom had very low eaves and we had only been in there 5 mins and I nearly knocked myself out on the ceiling. We then drove to Checkendon Equestrian Centre to have a quick look around. The yard was neat and tidy but the buildings we saw were very old and the indoor school definitely needs a revamp.I loved the notices outside the stable doors they had the horses name on them and then a list which said RUGS – DAY – Very Cold, Cold, Warm, Very warm, Hot, NIGHT – Very Cold, Cold, Warm, Very warm, Hot and a rug description by each one, every horse seemed to have at least 5 rugs in its stable. That would really confuse everyone here. We took a drive into Henley on Thames in the evening for something to eat. Lovely town on the river Thames but I bet the houses there cost a small fortune. I dropped Amelia off at the centre at 8.15am the next morning. I was going to spend the day in Oxford but as it was now pouring down with rain I actually spent most of it in a massive garden centre just outside Oxford. I picked Amelia  up about 3.30pm. The care side of the exam went well but Amelia wasn’t happy about the lungeing as she again had a horse that was very reluctant to move out of walk but she did feel as though she had been more assertive. It is very demoralising to be trying to do your best in an exam situation and then to be given horses which are difficult for the most experienced to cope with and also unfair when it costs so much to do the exams the resit alone cost £124 and with the guest house petrol and meals on top there wasn’t much change from £300. Whilst at Checkendon I picked up a price list so for anyone who thinks we might be a bit expensive at Talygarn at £16 for a group lesson, a one hour group lesson at Checkendon is £33 a person and £45 for a one hour private lesson although this is cheaper than Hyde Park stables in London which charge £59 for a group lesson and £79 for a private lesson. Amelia received the results of the exam yesterday and I’m pleased to say she passed the care which gives her the full Stage 3. So after she has completed her portfolio she will be a fully qualified BHSAI.
