The Pony Club National Quiz 09

We left for Warwick in the lorry on Saturday as Amelia had qualified Destiny for the Open Dengie Show Jumping, unfortunately she had the last fence down in the first round. We were very pleased with Destiny though as the course was big and the spreads very wide. Steve dropped Amelia and I off in the Travel Lodge near Alcester Stratford at 9pm and then took Destiny home. Chloe Reakes and her parents Sharon and Mike picked us up in the morning to return to Warwickshire College for The Pony Club National Quiz. Parents Sue Reville and Jackie Morgan brought the rest of the team up. Talygarn won the quiz last year so after a quick check with Sue that she had remembered to bring the Silver Salva  from last year (Thanks Sue for polishing it!!)  we had a coffee and headed to the hall,  The Talygarn team consisted of Chloe Reakes, Carys Morgan, Carys Reville and Angharad Davies. Amelia joined her Team from Llangeinor who had also qualified by winning the area 10 quiz. There was a team managers briefing at 11.15 and the quiz started at 11.30am. The first round was questions on the Pony Club followed by All creatures great and small, Horse and pony care and Journey around the UK. At lunch time the scores were put up and Talygarn were lying in 4th place. The sun was shinning so we ate a picnic courtesy of Jackie Morgan on the grass outside. After Lunch was a Practical round, Odd one out, Picture round and a Number round. At the end of the quiz the overall feeling of the team was that they didn’t think they would win but they thought they would be placed fairly high up. There were 11 centre teams from all over the UK each having won their area competition to qualify. The placings were up to 10th therefore the 11th team would not be placed  The results for the Centres were announced from 10th to 4th and then the results for the branches were anounced 10th to 4th. The Llangeinor Team came in in ninth place which was very good, there were 17 branch teams. Talygarn felt that they would either be 2nd or 3rd and when both had been called out I think there was a fleeting moment when they wondered if they hadn’t been called because they had actuallycome 11th but then they were called into first place. They received the Silver Salva which I will have to have engraved again and a smaller Silver Salva each plus books, T shirts, Sashs and a Rosette. The photographs are in the Gallery and there will be photos on the Pony Club Website soon.  Over the last few years there has also been a prize given for the best Mascot. Talygarn’s mascot consisted of a horse complete with rug and travel bandages made by Carys Morgan and a trailor made from cardboard with wheels, straw, haynet etc made by Carys Reville. Each team had to say something about their Mascot. Talygarn won the prize. I think what swung it for them was when Carys R mentioned that the trailor was insured by NFU (NFU insurance are the sponsors of the pony club quiz) They won note pads and sandwhichs bags from the NFU as prizes. We left Morton Morell and headed back down the A46 stopping at McDonalds  as now seems to be the  tradition after every Pony Club Competition.  Some of the questions from the Quiz can be found on the Forum under quiz questions
