« Previous EntriesShow Jumping Lucky Jasper & Hannah
Monday, April 27th, 2009Today we had decided to take Lucky and Jasper to a show with young riders Molly and Zoe M as we are looking for a pony to take to the Pony Club Centre Champs in Derby. Kate also came with us and brought Hannah. The girls were excited and arrived on the yard to get their pony’s ready. The plan was to leave at 9 and go to Millbrook show at Pencoed. Carys and Sarah came to help and they all left with Amelia and Steve I planned to go down in the car after things were organised for the lessons. Half an hour later I got a call to say that they had arrived at Pencoed and the show was cancelled. The girls were obviously disappointed but I quickly checked the web and and then they were off to Sunnybank. Kate’s mother Sue picked me up and then Sheena who had decided to take her girls to watch rang me to say she was in Llanbradach and could I give her directions, well I didn’t have a clue I know exactly where it is and how to drive there but give directions – no idea, follow signs for caerphilly then newport then rudry go over lots of roundabouts an its on the left anyway she rang Steve and found it. Carys and Sarah had a quick warm up in the practice ring just to see how they were whilst Amelia walked the course with Zoe Molly and Kate, then Zoe got on Lucky and Molly on Jasper, Hannah was playing up a bit so Carys rode her for a while. All these ponies jump very well at home but haven’t been anywhere for a long time and not at all in Jaspers case. Zoe took Lucky in the 1′9 on entering the indoor school Lucky decided this was the most terrifying thing ever and refused to go near anything, she did get him round in the end but with lots of stops. Kate had quite a few problems with Hannah and was eliminated at the 2nd fence and whereas they let Zoe carry on for some reason Kate wasn’t allowed to. Jasper was also terrified and backed off every fence although did jump them all without stopping but did get 4 faults when he shot off and turned a circle at the far end. Carys took Hannah and Sarah took Lucky back in the same class hor concour and being older and stronger they both got them round. The girls then entered the 2ft which was a two phase competition, they walked the course and then swapped ponies Zoe took Jasper in and Molly rode Lucky both girls got round fine but both had 4 faults for a knocked down fence. Molly came 4th on Lucky and Zoe 5th on Jasper. Kate was still a little nervous on Hannah and Hannah played up a bit so Kate didn’t get round. Just needs a bit more practice. All three looked very smart in their riding jackets and white shirts. Photos are on the Gallery

Bertha Beryl and Barbara
Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009Bertha, Beryl and Barbara are mothers at Talygarn Riding school, as part of Bertha’s job she has to conduct a survey into why people should give up smoking, choosing Beryl as a suitable candidate Bertha proceeded to try to convince Beryl that she should give up the costly habit. Bertha pointed out to Beryl that one cigarette contained not just nicotine but up to 50 drugs, Beryls eyes lit up with excitement and she commented ‘Bargain, that’s amazing think how much time I save by not having to visit all those dealers individually as it’s all there in one cigarette’. Bertha moved on and tried Barbara who stated that she had once tried inhalators to help give up but they had made her throat very dry. Beryl appeared on the scene as Bertha informed Barbara that she should have warmed them up by putting them down her bra, Beryl looked horrified and stated ‘ Put my cigarette down my bra why would I do that it would burn my Boobs’ Genuine conversation heard at the Burger Van, Names changed to protect Identity (but it’s easy to work out)

Easter Holidays at Talygarn
Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009Glad to be back to normal after the two hectic weeks I have had over Easter. Easter holidays at Talygarn always seems to be a busy time with the activities on here and several Pony Club events to fit in as well. The Easter holidays started with Amelia jumping in Warwick on the saturday then back to Warwick the next day for the National quiz which Talygarn won. Monday was taken up most of the day with preparations for the Team jumping on Wednesday as I was away in Brecon all day on Tuesday with the Pony Club Horse Care Teams and Talygarn Senior team did very well to come 2nd. The Team jumping was very busy with 32 teams. Managed to fit in a bit of gardening thursday and now have three fruit trees in the garden along with the strawberries and fruit bushes. Friday we had our client show jumping which was quite busy followed by Aly’s 40th birthday in Llanharan rugby club. Aly was one of our first Yale students back in 2000. Saturday was the usual lessons all day but Sunday and Monday was great fun riding all the ponies out bareback although I did nearly fall off Jasper when he stuck his head down to the grass and I only had a head collar on him. Tuesday was pony day which and Wednesday and Thursday Pony Club Centre days. The weather was good and the fields dry so we decided to do some cross country. There were 13 riding and Amelia and I had half each and between us we managed to have 5 on the floor. No one was hurt and the horses and ponies were very well behaved. Kate had the fastest fall when Hannah swerved at a fence and shot off this was in the arena before going to the field. Bethan Gareth and Libby wobbled off the sides and Carys’s fall made a good photo when Carys went over Blues head. In the afternoon the pony Club centre members learnt the origins of the letters around the arena what letters there are and the dimensions of the arena. On thursday the riding Activity was polocrosse Zoe was the only one who fell off but this is because Zoe is very competitive goes far too fast and there are many occasions when there is no contact between Zoe and the pony at all so it was inevitable that on at least one occasion they were going to go in different directions but she was on her feet in an instance and back on and going just as fast. Six of the children passed their next pony club tests and they all had their Acheivement badge. Friday we had another client showjumping day which was very busy. We had quite a lot of young children turn up having a go at the small classes on a lead rein. Friday was a late night out so saturday was a bit of a long day, Its not the hangovers I don’t really get those but I do get tired the next day now, so saturday nights show jumping was a bit of a struggle by 9pm. Along with lessons all day there was also Mini pony Club on Saturday for 4 to 6yr olds and they all passed their grooming badge. Amelia jumped Fred and Destiny at Sunnybank on Sunday, Fred had a fence down in the 2′9 and Destiny was 1st in the 3ft. Monday we were short of staff so I worked on the yard most of the day with Paris and Jen and last night we went to see thriller in the Bristol Hippodrome. Students came back today so it was nice for me to ride in the lesson this morning, teach theory catch up on a bit of paperwork and I only had one lesson to teach tonight.

Talygarn Team Show Jumping
Thursday, April 9th, 2009I left the indoor school at around 10.30 last night after getting the course ready for the Talyarn team show jumping and the rain was hammering down and running down the lane in a river, just what we need for show jumping!! The day started early and surprisingly dry, with 32 teams from Talygarn, Mynydd RC, LlangeinorPC, Glamorgan PC and Millbrook RC to get through we needed the first one in at 9am and to be fair to Llangeinor, the first drawn team, they were there on the dot. The class ran smoothly although I did see a few kids fall off but the prize for the best fall has to go to Sarah Blake who fell whilst leading Marianne on Lucky, Sarah jumped the first fence leading the pony, stumbled, staggered several strides then fell flat on her face letting the pony go. (There will be a public showing on the CCTV on Saturday). My first problem came when opening the box with the team prizes in to find the suppliers had only sent me 7 hat and boot bags instead of 16 but the winners were all ok about it and hopefully they will receive the rest of they’re prizes tomorrow. I rang the suppliers who informed me that they had only charged me for 7 to which I replied ‘but you knew I needed 16′ and they said the problem was their wharehouse didn’t always tell their computer when they had run out and sometimes they think they have things when really they haven’t. I didn’t know what to say – so much for modern technology. The next problem came with the prize for the series winner. I had advertised on the schedule that there would be prizes to the winning team (not teams) of the points from the series. The first class are very young and as I had a few spare items I decided to give the 2nd team a consolation prize, well I have to say I wish I hadn’t. The first team received their prizes and championship rosettes and the 2nd team had some small prizes. One parent complained to several people that she thought it very bad that they hadn’t received rosettes as well as she had supported the jumping through all 4 shows and thought the winning team had received too much and presumably their team should have had more and rosettes. I think people need to realise that we are not a charity or a club and we do not have sponsors we have to make money out of what we do and as a business I think we give a lot back. There are few clubs let alone businesses paying out for the amount of Rosettes, Sashes Prizes, medals etc that we do and unlike most clubs our staff are not working out of the goodness of their hearts although to be fair they are very good and if it wasn’t for some people that give their time willingly we wouldn’t be able to run it at all. The third problem came with the outdoor school, too many kids are using the outdoor school to race around in and they should only be in there if they are warming up for their class, consequently Sophie who was riding for Talygarn and has only recently bought her horse who was alarmed and Sophie fell off injuring her leg and was unable to compete and it was Sophie’s birthday. At one point I even had to turf kids out of the fields who had thought it would be a good idea to take their horses in there and jump the cross country fences. The 4th problem was quite amusing. There is a woodland area to the left of the school which has had some machinery in there lately and has left it rather muddy and churned up, several children decided this would be a good play area and when I spotted them they were covered in mud one had lost her boots and I had visions of them sinking up to their waists in mud. All the classes ran very well with Talygarn picking up quite a few places. A Big Congratulations must go the Glamorgan Pony Club Teams who were the overall points winners in every class. On the whole it was a good day and even though team jumping takes a lot of organising I think its well worth it especially to see how well some of the kids have come on through the series. The weather held out and it was great not to be finishing in the dark even though it was 8pm. The next series will start in October this year and I hope there are a few teams out there planning to give Glamorgan a run for their money. Pictures are on the Gallery ( Sorry about he 2′6 pics there wasn’t enough light but if anyone has any e mail them to me and I will add them)

Pony Club Area Horse and Pony Care Competition 09
Wednesday, April 8th, 2009Another early start this morning saw us travelling to Trebinshwn House, Bwlch in Brecon for the Pony Club Area Horse and Pony Competition run by the Brecon and Talybont Hunt Branch of the Pony Club. I entered two junior teams and one senior team. Kelly Galsworthy trained the junior teams and Amelia Rogers trained the senior team. Kelly (Chief map reader), Amelia myself and the senior team travelled up together and Sue owens and Tracey Bushrod brought the junior teams up to Brecon. The competition started at 10.15 and there were 19 junior teams and 6 senior teams. The seniors tasks included rug care, applying stable and excercise bandages, identifying boots, plaiting, naming clips and care of clippers, assembling a double bridle, shoes and structure of the foot, recognition of objects, feeding fitness and health. The juniors tasks included Putting on a rug and tail bandage and identifying rugs, handling grooming and health of a pony, assembling a snaffle bridle, identifying breeds colours markings and points of the horse, road safety, first aid, tack care and cleaning. The two juniors teams were Talygarn Pink Carys Reville, Kate Owen and Zoe Hughes and Talygarn Purple Libby John, Millie Bushrod and Zoe Morgan. I was very impressed with how well they did, although they were not in the placings and came 7th and 9th in some of their sections they had very good scores. The senior team were Chloe Reakes, Carys Morgan and Emily Hunt who were thrilled to come 2nd with very good scores all round. We were lucky with the weather there was a couple of showers but fortunately not to bad as most of the time is spent outdoors. It was nice to see another Centre as well as ourselves competing along side all of the branches. Photos are in the Gallery on the website. After the competition finished we made our way home with another traditional stop at McDonalds. We travelled there via Brecon and home via Pontypool and Kelly’s directions were spot on, I’m thinking maybe Map reading Badge could be on the cards for Pony Club soon Kel
