« Previous EntriesPhoebe
Sunday, January 27th, 2008Phoebe can be a star and also an embarrassment as Freya found out today. There was show jumping at Sunnybank and Freya was excited about taking Phoebe. Freya washed her legs and tail yesterday and today we put her on the box with Destiny to go to the show. When we arrived we went to enter the class and Freya walked the course. Freya, Jodie and Amelia then went to get her off the lorry and tack her up. Whilst putting the bridle on Phoebe got impatient and decided to go, Jodie and Freya were trying to hang on to her to stop her going but as she picked up more speed they were skiing whilst she dragged them along, she headed straight at Amelia who tried to step in her path but Phoebe swerved right and freya and Jodie lost their grip as she flung them to the side they landed on their bums at Amelia’s feet and went skidding across the car park. Steve and I were just coming around the corner when we spotted Phoebe galloping towards us with her bridle around her neck and legs. After catching her and putting Destiny’s bridle on to replace her now broken one Freya jumped her in the 2′3 and came 5th and the 2′6 and came 3rd. I think Freya has forgiven her now. Amelia jumped Destiny in the 3′ and came 2nd.
Blogs will probably be few and far between for the next few weeks as I am going to Thailand tonight for 3 weeks (don’t ring me!!) I will try and find internet access and write a few from Thailand. Maybe on schooling an elephant, if I get chance to ride one!!!!!!! and I’m sure you’ll want here how the weather is

First Fall
Saturday, January 26th, 2008Today my daughter Amelia was teaching a level 1 lesson where the kids dont yet canter. One of the ponies was rather naughty bucked several times and took off in canter and the child – Callum fell off. His mum who was watching was a bit alarmed and screamed.I received this e mail from them this evening and just had to post it on the blog
Hi Callum and mum hear just to let Emilia know that i am fine a bruised hip and knee, i am a strange boy and i enjoyed the fast ride and the fall, i always enjoy new experiences and have the need for speed. my poor overreacting mum on the other hand cant cope with that or me come to think of it,my mum sends her deepest apologies for screaming like a mad woman [even though she is a bit crazy] we are both fully aware that horses can be unpredictable just like men, my mums only regrets is that I’m talking even more,
What i really want to say is i enjoyed today MY FIRST FALL and your first fall as a teacher its not put me off in the slightest hope your OK ‘
Your obviously a great kid Callum and you’ll go a long way, you gotta be brave to ride, most ponies are very good but they can be a bit awkward sometimes.

Clipping Michigan
Friday, January 25th, 2008We were warned when he arrived that Michigan would be difficult to Clip. As he is starting to do a bit more work now and is a complete 16.3hh fluff ball he really needs some coat off. Jess held him on the yard a few days ago and I turned the clippers on and yes they were right we weren’t going to get anywhere near him. So today we sedated him with 6mls of sedalin paste and left him an hour for it to take effect. He looked a little dopey but not as much as I would have liked, after another half hour I was wondering if we should have given him the whole syringe but as I was running out of time we decided to give it a go. Jess put a head collar and lead rein on and held him in a stable the door was closed but not bolted in case he went nuts. When I turned the clippers on he wasn’t too bad and I managed to clip a 2inch square off his shoulder when he decided he wasn’t having it at all, He lunged at the door knocking me sideways and nearly knocking Jess out. Leigh took over from Jess and we decided to twitch him as well. By this time Michigan had broken out in a sweat and although we managed to get a low chaser clip off him (only being thrown into the walls about half a dozen times) the clippers were now struggling to get to get through the coat so he looks a little patchy. At one point Leigh held him complete with twitch over the door whilst I was in the stable on my own with him as when he threw himself around we were getting in each others way. The funniest bit is the hairy armpits when he did stand still and wasn’t throwing us against the walls he planted himself to the floor and refused to move a leg so I couldn’t get under the forlegs with the clippers. At one point he also jumped on Leigh’s foot. Some horses don’t bat an eyelid at being clipped and others seem to think your about to kill them. It is a dangerous situation to be in a stable with a large animal and electric clippers in your hand. This horse is 16yr old now and has jumped and hunted so he must have been clipped many a time, he has either never liked it or possibly he has had a bad experience, they don’t forget.

BSJA Pencoed 20/01/08
Monday, January 21st, 2008Today Amelia took her two horses Ami De La Destinee (Destiny) and Watts Middlemarch (Leo) to Pencoed College for the BSJA ShowJumping. Thinking we weren’t in any rush as she didn’t jump until about 5pm last time we were there, I rang at lunchtime to find out what class they were on, as they had not had so many entries for the bigger classes I discovered we only had an hour to get there. I do not like the order of classes at Pencoed as they start with the 1m10 and go up in height then drop back to the Bitish Novice, Discovery and 1m open. Which means Leo could only jump one class as he has won too much for the British Novice and Discovery. He can jump the 1m10 but that means being there for the first class and the last class and jumping the bigger class before the smaller class. Destiny will soon have won too much for the British Novice, therefore she could jump the 1m10 first class then two 1m classes at the end of the day. For us that would mean bring them home about lunchtime and going back in the evening if it was a busy show the alternative for many people would be to sit there all day. A very silly schedule I think and from speaking to others many people think so to. The weather was appalling blowing a gale and raining. The outdoor school is used for the warm up ring and it is a good size school although the surface was very deep. Amelia warmed Destiny up, jumped the cross pole a few times then put it to an upright and then moved to the oxo which for some reason Destiny didn’t like and stopped about 5 yards from it twice, She can be a very spooky mare so this didn’t look good but Destiny jumped a good round in the British Novice (approx 3ft) with approx 20 in the class. Unfortunately taking the first fence down in the jump off so ended with 4 faults with the second or third fastest time. Griff Griffiths won the class. In the Discovery she again jumped a good round. Amelia took a chance in the jump off and cut a tight turn inside an upright, managed to skirt around a floral display making a tight turn into a large spread but Destiny took it on, jumping a clear and finished in 2nd place. Destiny went on the box and Leo came off there were only six competitors in the last class so by the time we had got her on and tacked him up there wasn’t much time to warm up. He rarely stops but also stopped at the oxo in the practise ring about 5 yards out which was strange, it was as if they could see something but no one else seemed to be having problems. Amelia only managed two practice fences and she was in the ring He needed longer to warm up and was a bit to strong and took one fence down. This is where it would have been ideal to have been able to then take him in the 1m10 he prefers bigger fences anyway and almost needs the first class to take the edge off him. All in all a good day though.

Cowboy
Sunday, January 20th, 2008I liked this its from Sophie
A cowboy goes into a bar, has a beer, walks outside and finds his horse has been stolen. He walks back into the bar, fires his gun through the ceiling. “Which one of you stole my hoss?” he yells. No one answers. “All right, I’m gonna have one more beer and if my hoss ain’t outside by the time I finish, I’m gonna do what I dun in Texas.” He drinks another beer, walks outside, and his horse is back. So he gets on it and gets ready to ride out of town. The bartender walks out of the bar and asks, “Say pardner, what happened in Texas?” The cowboy turns to him, and says, “I had to walk home.
and there’s more from Sophie on the forum
