Riding School

This week has been chaotic to say the least. Several students have been suffering with the ‘new term flu symptons’, Leavin us a little short handed. Freya is still unwell but hopefully back soon(Everyone sends their love and hopes your back soon). Harry the pacer is still here, not sure whether he is staying or going. Two new ponies came on loan this week, Pete a chesnut 12hh pony who seems quite cute and a 13hh bay called Fuzz who is also nice but needs a little schooling. Sarah and Jodie rode them the first few days and now they have gone into lessons, they have also gone into the fields with the other ponies tonight and seem to have settled in quite well. The schools are settling into a good routine now on Tues and Wed although it is still quite demanding to sort them all out. The Pony Club C Test Training started again on Thursday, numbers were low this week but hopefully they will pick up once word gets around. Nadine is doing the training for this and the kids who were here on Thursday enjoyed the session on shoeing and felt they had learnt a lot. Marina Evans has started her stages courses and Intermediate teaching course this week on Thursday and Saturday. Which now means Marina is teaching here 5 full days a week. Amelia is doing very well with her teaching hours on a saturday and the kids seem to take to her well. We had another new instructor on Friday night Ann, as unfortunately Laura is finding that after she finishes lecturing at Coleg Gwent it is taking her nearly two hours on the M4 to get here and she just can’t make it by 4.30pm. Laura will be staying on to teach the Horse Owners on a Monday evening thou for the time being. Ann is an experienced instructor and the lessons went well. My Students are making good progress and hopefully we can complete NVQ 1 before Xmas. They are a really nice lot this year though and everyone seems to be getting on well. The Committee for the Pony Club Centre aged between 12 & 16yrs are concentrating on making money to fund their Halloween party on the 27th October, today they organised hacks out and managed to raise £65 Tonight I took 6 teenagers out for a hack and we had a somewhat hair raising gallop along strawberry lane, Sarah set the pace with very little control which resulted in me having no control with Carys Jodie Hannah Jess and Emily following which would have been ok until Sarah on Lucy came to an abrupt halt on a narrow lane, Blue swerved to miss her and the rest did manage to stop somehow without running each other over. The Lorry went for plating on Friday and failed on the brakes which was then a major problem as they plating centre won’t let it be driven away and it had to be picked up on a low loader. Steve was then late to go to the cash and carry, by 5pm I had 4 students to see to in the office, a new instuctor in the school and a meeting with Welsh College. It’s really difficult to be in three places at the same time. Leigh has started clipping the horses this week as they are finding it harder to work with their winter coats coming through. Tomorrow me and the family are going to see my daughter for a week in Cyprus so its also been hectic this week trying to put everything in place for next week when we won’t be here. To all kids here next week please put your mess in the bins, clean my tack, try to remember to put the right rugs on the right horses i.e tonight Freds is on Tessa and Tessa’s is on Fred which I can’t change because I can’t catch him, put Murphy and whispa’s fly rug on and don’t make any decisions without asking someone. Hopefully I’ve thought of everything and if I haven’t well once I’m on that plane I’m not gonna think about it!!!

Harry

Harry is the horse Leigh and I went to see in West Wales on the 13th Sept (See Buying Horses) Harry is 16hh Bay Warmblood TB type He was difficult to ride and spooky due to pigs being in the adjoining field and had a strange action which we put down to being very lame possibly cause he only had 3 shoes on. Last Friday the owner got in touch said he had the shoes sorted out and taken him to the vet and he was now sound, so I agreed to have the horse for a week on trial. Harry arrived Saturday. On Sunday we found some tack for him and Amelia rode him and he was very lame, left hind. Having broken my phone on saturday I now didnt have a number to ring but did manage to get in touch with owner on Monday morning who agreed to pick him up Tuesday, half hour later he rang back to say that he was picking up the horse and taking it to Worcester to see Tex. Tex is a back man who has been around for many years and people travel along way to see him, I think he has a rather unusual approach but if it works!!! By 5pm the owner was back on the phone claiming Tex had cured him and now he needed to work. So I agreed to take him back for a few days. Tuesday we put the tack on, Jess rode him and he wasn’t lame, although the strange action remained and Marina wondered if there was pacers in his breeding as she thought he looked that way, on asking him to canter we discovered he is a pacer, so back on phone to owner. Its now Thursday, not heard from owner Harry still here!!!!!!!!!!

Spurs

The cowboy walked into the tack shop.
“How much for a pair of spurs?” he asked the sales clerk.
“Forty dollars.”
The cowboy looked in his wallet, thought for a moment, then pulled
out a twenty.
“I’ll take one spur.”
“What’ll you do with just one?” the clerk asked.
The cowboy replied, “I figger if I can get one side of the horse
movin’, the other side’ll go too.”
